Assessing RMIT’s Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for the 2010 -11 financial year.
Completion: February 2014
The Centre for Design and Society (CfD+S) were commissioned by RMIT University’s Sustainability Committee to assess RMIT’s Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for the 2010 -11 financial year, including the emissions associated with procurement, services and investments, staff and student travel, food procurement and food waste. A hybrid life cycle assessment approach was used, which combines input-output analysis with process-based LCA. The Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions were of similar magnitude to those associated with electricity production (Scope 2) and fuel use (Scope 1). This result exemplifies why it is important to include other activities in greenhouse gas reporting, beyond typical greenhouse gas reporting requirements (e.g. Scope 1 and 2).
