In this presentation, Julian CH Lee will be discussing issues surrounding the promotion of human rights relating to sexual orientation and gender identity in Malaysia
Issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity have become increasingly contentious in Malaysia with a major furore taking place in 2011 over the banning of a social movement that sought to raise awareness of the array of issues in Malaysia in this regard. Through the screening of his documentary film, Closing the Doors, Lee shares the narratives of activists about this furore, along with the perspectives of social scientists who provide an insight into the wider political context in which it took place. This 28 minute documentary provides an insider’s view into this episode in Malaysia’s human rights story.
