The Centre addresses organisation in the broadest sense, exploring research questions through historical and contemporary practices.
An on-going focus has been on sustainability in relation to the on-going nature of organisations, the role of management and workforces in this process and the ways in which organisations (and particularly unions) can renew themselves. The Centre seeks to investigate risk and sustainability in its broad economic, sociological and environmental dimensions. This focus on sustainability provides the opportunity to research economic and social transition in old industrial communities, as well as the way in which climate change stimulates a consideration of social, economic and political change. Our research also links sustainability to socially responsible management and organisational resilience; this includes the need for more inclusive organisations that recognise diversity and equality as key elements of sustainability. The Centre also has specialist expertise in applying these concepts to issues of disaster and emergency management.
There are two distinctive developments in this research: a focus on technologies, and design, particularly in relation to ‘Green’ and sustainable Information technologies and a focus on gender and gender inequality as important social factors in understanding organisations and communities.
A further dimension to this research is the multifaceted way in which risk can be traded, both in terms of organisations and in terms of individuals. The Global Financial Crisis in which the risk attributes of households were securitised and sold as assets demonstrates that this process is a frontier issue and also that its sustainability is an urgent consideration. It also highlights issues of fiduciary responsibility, trust and stewardship, particularly with reference to the governance of worker’s capital (e.g. international pension funds).
