Absence and the city
The presence of absence: conceptualising absence in the city through contemporary art practice.
This practice-led research project investigates sites of absence in three cities: New York (USA), Varanasi (India) and Shanghai (China). By focusing on absence as the research site, this project problematizes the dominant discourses and ways of conceptualizing urban space through presence and ocular means. Sites of absence are identified through fieldwork in each city and investigated through an art practice that employs haptic methods to access a broader multi-sensory experience of the urban environment.
