A key focus of the Centre is conducting research at a world standard that has real and tangible benefits to industry, government and society. Our research is grouped into four broad areas.
Aerospace materials and structures aerodynamics
We have expertise in the development, manufacture and testing of advanced fibre reinforced composites, light alloys and high and multi-functional materials.
Research also includes testing the properties of materials under high temperatures and loads.
Access to two wind tunnels and high performance computing supports significant outcomes in experimental and computational fluid dynamics.
Avionics systems and through-life support
This research theme focuses on sustainable aircraft maintenance, repair, and certification, structural health monitoring and safety prognostics.
It also looks at systems for more sustainable aviation including:
- advanced air traffic management and aircraft systems
- trajectory optimisation
- systems to reduce aircraft emissions.
We are the Defence Science and Technology Organisation’s (DSTO) Centre of Excellence in composite material repair.
We undertake research in a wide range of emerging aerospace technologies including unmanned aircraft systems, efficient propulsion and energy storage systems, airborne sensing, signal processing and advanced avionics.
Design, certification and manufacturing processes
RMIT University’s Advanced Manufacturing Precinct (AMP) provides Centre researchers with world-class equipment to support research in additive manufacturing for corrosion repair and low-cost manufacturing technologies for composite structures.
The Centre also conducts research into advanced aerospace design, airworthiness and certification, aviation safety systems and risk management, and complex systems analysis.
Power, energy and propulsion systems
Wackett Centre researchers are conducting research into novel energy and propulsion systems for use in a broad range of applications. Research includes reversible fuel cells, solar systems, alternate fuel systems, and piezoelectric systems.
