Mentoring provides a structured and trusting relationship with someone who can openly and honestly provide you with guidance, support and encouragement about your career. 

With a mentor, you can benefit from someone else’s professional and personal experiences. The relationship can boost your self-esteem and resilience by actively supporting your social and emotional wellbeing. Understanding another person’s career trajectory can make you more motivated and focused on your own career.

RMIT focuses on career mentoring to help students transition from study to work and maximise their confidence. RMIT also runs mentoring programs to support particular groups, such as Women @ RMIT and Pride Mentoring.

Industry mentoring connects students with experienced professionals working in their area of interest.

Industry mentors: Our mentors come from a variety of private, public sector and not-for-profit organisations and have management and leadership experience. 

RMIT alumni mentors: Many of our mentors are RMIT alumni, who can relate to your experience as a student. They’ll be able to help guide you through the transition from study to work.

The opportunity to bounce your career ideas off someone with experience in your industry is invaluable. A mentor who understands your goals and industry can give you feedback on your ideas and steer you in the right direction.

Give advice, insights and guidance

Your mentor might give you guidance about your career direction, ways to develop your employability skills or how to tackle a work challenge. With that advice, you can use your time more effectively, network with the right people and gain confidence.

Connect you with work experience

Some mentors can even offer you workplace experience. You might get the chance to shadow your mentor and observe them working. Other mentors may be able to offer you paid or unpaid internship opportunities, which can help you to extend your professional networks and gain experience. A mentorship might even lead to employment!

Before you begin our mentoring program, you’ll need to complete our online induction module for mentees. The module will help you learn about the different forms mentoring can take, what you should get out of mentoring and your time commitments. 

Send a mentoring request to your preferred mentor

After you join the program, you’ll get the chance to review profiles of available mentors, so you can connect with someone who has the skills and experience to support you. Then, you can send a request to the one you’d most like to meet with.

All of our mentors are volunteering their time and expertise. Our mentorship program lets professionals tap into new talent in their industry. Through programs like Women @ RMIT, industries with traditional bias against certain groups can connect with emerging talent, who may otherwise have been overlooked.

Mentors have the opportunity to give back to students, while investing in their talent, skills and innovative thinking.
