Choose an effective business name

First, you need to decide on a name.

Your business name is a major element of your identity and image. Your business name should:

  • be recognizable
  • be easy to pronounce, remember and spell
  • be unique and not similar to existing company names or trademarks
  • be appropriate, professional and not offensive
  • be descriptive (e.g. Computer Solutions) or quirky (e.g. Google).

There are certain words that you are unable to use in your business name. View the list of restricted words or expressions on the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) website.

Apply for an ABN

Before registering your business name, you need to have an Australian Business Number (ABN). If you don't have one, you need to apply for it through the Australian Business Register.

If you want to have a website, you should check if there is an existing web address (domain or domain name) before registering a name or business number. You can look this up on:

Finally, set up your account with ASIC to register your business name on the ASIC Connect homepage. Follow through on the steps to register your business name.
