Transfers are also available to candidates from other universities if they meet the entry requirements for the new program and resources are available.

You must successfully undertake a PhD Confirmation of Candidature and have a recommendation to transfer from your milestone review panel before you can apply to transfer to a PhD program. This must occur during your second milestone review window.

Your consumed candidature in the Masters program will be counted towards your PhD candidature and your milestone and maximum completion dates for the new program will be calculated to take this into consideration.

If you undertake a PhD Confirmation of Candidature and are not recommended for a transfer, you will be required to present your Masters by Research second milestone review before the end of your milestone window. At the successful completion of your Masters by Research degree you can then apply for a PhD.

You must successfully undertake a Masters by Research level milestone review and have a recommendation to transfer from your milestone review panel before you can apply to transfer to a Masters program. This would normally occur before the end of your second milestone review window.

A Review Panel can also recommend that you consider a transfer from a PhD to a Masters by Research program on the basis of unsatisfactory performance at a milestone review.

Your consumed candidature in the PhD program will be counted towards your Masters candidature and your milestone and maximum completion dates for the new program will be calculated to take this into consideration. If you have already exceeded the maximum duration of the Masters program, you will be required to immediately submit for examination or voluntarily discontinue your enrolment and apply for readmission for examination when you are ready to submit.

If you have already submitted your thesis or project for examination, you cannot transfer from a PhD to a Masters by Research degree.

If you are transferring from one program to another at the same level, your milestone and maximum completion dates will not change. You must take this into consideration if you are planning to change your topic as part of a transfer to a new program.
If you would like to transfer to RMIT from another university you must review your eligibility and submit an application for entry.

If you would like to transfer to another program, you must submit a complete application, including a change of program for HDR candidates form (PDF 235KB). Please refer to section 2 of the Program transfer process for more information.

If you are receiving a scholarship or are a sponsored student, you will need to contact your scholarship provider or your sponsor before submitting your application to transfer to discuss any implications the transfer may have.

International candidates

If you are an international candidate from a sanctioned country, your application to change your program will need to be assessed as a part of the approval process. You should take this additional step into consideration when submitting your application to ensure that you allow enough time for your application to be processed.
