PhD Up – Presenting with Confidence

Presenting is an important part of an academic's toolkit. Learn how to do it successfully!

'Science is not finished until it’s communicated' - this is a quote from the UK’s Chief Scientist. It doesn’t just apply to science. In any discipline, the art of presenting to just about any audience about your research, often with little or no warning, is vital to getting your next big research grant, landing your dream job or winning over your colleagues in the department.

Join Simon Clews, specialist in written and oral communication and author of The New Academic, and learn how to write, present and profile your amazing research to the world. This session is designed to assist researchers who present in public, whether it be to small groups ‘in the lab’ or large groups at meetings, conferences and public events.

The session will look at:

  • Preparing your presentation - everything from the receipt of the invitation all the way up to stepping on stage: planning the presentation, designing the slides, and getting on top of the logistics
  • Delivery of the presentation - thinking about public speaking, engaging with an audience, staying in control and thinking on your feet
  • Presenting in-person vs. online - considerations that are altered depending on whether your audience is in the room or virtual.
