Work-around

Gmail

  • Gmail (in standard view) is not easily navigated by keyboard
  • Gmail (in standard view) lacks readability by screen readers
  • Use the HTML version of Gmail, accessed by a link at the bottom of the mail page once logged in.
  • Use a ‘thick client’ to access your Gmail, such as Outlook or Thunderbird. These (and other programs) can be easily configured to send and receive Gmail
  • Access on mobile devices tends to offer an improved experience, however this will depend on the mobile device in question. Android and iPhone both offer accessible mail clients

Google Calendar

  • Appointments are not screen readable in the calendar
  • Calendar is not easily navigated by keys
  • Use another mail client – we would recommend Outlook – to use your Google Calendar. Once configured, you will also be able to send and receive your email

Google documents

  • Collaboration functions, such as multi user editing are not accessible
  • Most forms are not fully accessible
  • Inserted video does not support closed captioning
  • Third party tools, such as Google Cloud Connect allow you to collaborate from Microsoft Word and synchronise with Google Apps. This method is useful for Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations.
  • Forms being used as surveys should instead be produced in SurveyMonkey (or another accessible provider)

Google chat

  • Google Chat proves difficult to navigate with a screen reader
  • Use of a different, accessible chat client is recommended for users with low vision. Accessible chat clients include Yahoo Messaging, ICQ, and MSN – however these may also present problems if you depend on screen reading software currently in use.

Google sites

  • Google Sites is largely not readable by screen readers
  • Google Sites is difficult to navigate by keyboard
  • Use of another product is recommended if you have a visual impairment.
