To assist students studying remotely from within China during 2021, RMIT is making available a temporary Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution. The Student VPN will allow students in China to more easily and quickly connect to online learning systems, including Canvas and MyDesktop.

The VPN will be available until the end of 2021.

The VPN does not work outside of China and is not available for students who reside in Australia.

How do I access the VPN?

Follow these steps to request access:

  1. Submit  an enquiry through the IT Service and Support portal. Write ‘China VPN request’ in the Subject field. RMIT will then send your details to Telstra to activate your VPN account. 
  2. Check your RMIT student email account. You will receive an email and instructions from noreply@telstra-pbs.cn with the subject line Student VPN login details and instructions. This will include a token to set up your account. 
  3. Set up your VPN access within 72 hours after receiving your email from Telstra (your token is active for 72 hours only). To set up your VPN access, follow the instructions in the  RMIT Student VPN User Guide (instructions in English and Chinese).

What can I use the VPN for?

By accessing the VPN, you agree to use it for study-related purposes only. This means that it can only be used to access RMIT’s online systems, study materials and RMIT web content related to your courses. If you are unable to access any of the content outside of RMIT, you will need to contact your course coordinator.  You may not use the VPN for personal use.

The RMIT Student Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows students to create a secure connection to the RMIT online learning systems over the internet. It is designed for use by students currently studying remotely in China who are experiencing difficulty accessing RMIT's online learning systems due to performance or latency issues based on their geographical location.
The VPN is only available to RMIT students enrolled in Melbourne-campus programs who are currently studying remotely in China. If you believe you need access to the VPN, please contact the IT Service and Support Centre.

Yes, the VPN connection is encrypted. Each time you connect, your connection is protected through a one-time password, security token and multi-factor authentication. However, as always when using the internet, you should take care when visiting sites that are not part of RMIT's online learning systems.

You should experience less latency and increased performance when visiting RMIT's online learning systems, such as Canvas and myDesktop. However, performance will also be determined by your local internet connection.
At this stage, the student VPN service will be available until the end of 2021.
Your VPN connection relies partly on your internet service provider. If you’re still experiencing a slow service, this could be related to your personal device or your local internet connection. If you’re having any issues with connecting, please contact the IT Service and Support Centre and we will be able to check whether it is a VPN performance issue.
