Vaccination for student placements

Some courses and programs require you to have immunisations, particularly if your course involves clinical placements in health-care settings.

Vaccinations for travel

Travelling to some overseas countries can expose you to diseases and infections that do not exist in Australia. Speak to a general practitioner (GP) or a travel-health specialist about whether you need to be vaccinated before you travel.

Influenza (flu) vaccine

Flu is a viral disease that causes widespread illness every year. New strains of flu develop all the time so to keep yourself protected you need to be vaccinated annually.

Common illnesses – colds and flu

Flu vaccination is recommended for people in high-risk groups, including:

  • people over 65
  • hospital patients and staff
  • some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
  • pregnant women
  • residents in nursing homes or other care facilities
  • people with severe asthma
  • anyone with a chronic illness.

Vaccination costs around $20 and is available from your GP.
