A desire to become an environmental policymaker in federal government led Indira to study the Bachelor of Environment and Society.
RMIT provides a balance in this degree that is allowing me to explore so many things that I would experience in the workforce. I’ve have been taught about policymaking, urban planning and environmental studies, and all of these topics are exactly what I need to excel in my career.
I chose to study at RMIT because this degree was exactly what I wanted. I did extensive research and no other university offered what I was looking for. RMIT has a central location, amazing facilities, flexibility and a great range of lecturers and tutors.
Coming into this degree, I didn’t have a full path planned out, but by not narrowing myself down to one option, I was able to explore all of the amazing opportunities within the program.
As part of my coursework, I completed a work placement at the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA). I worked for 12 weeks as a researcher investigating the relationship between gas-free housing developments and people having access to renewable energy. This placement was great, as it allowed me to work and interact with environment professionals and local government departments and also enhanced my skills in research, interviewing people and writing, and allowed for a sense of independence outside of the RMIT walls.
At the end of this project, I worked with a team to produce a report that analysed barriers to change, what is currently being done and what local governments can do in this situation. Once we submitted this report to NAGA, it was published for all of their local government stakeholders.
Throughout my studies, I’ve also learnt a range of transferable skills, including research techniques, teamwork and time management, and writing, and through this I’ve gained confidence in my own abilities. In addition to what I’m learning in my degree, I’ve been able to visit the RMIT Job Centre or take courses in résumé writing and interview skills. At RMIT there are so many opportunities to further yourself to make you employable, and they’re always easy to be a part of.
This degree has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The opportunities that have been offered to me have been incredible. In no other situation would I be able to take what I have learnt in this degree and actually apply it to real-life circumstances.
