Having worked in the human resources sector for almost a decade, Fernando Domingues chose to study the Master of International Business to expand his knowledge and expertise.
Why did you choose to study your program?
It had been almost seven years since I completed my undergraduate degree in human resources, I had heard about RMIT while at home in Brazil and decided it was time to advance my prospects. I wanted to expand my opportunities and theoretical knowledge of contemporary practices.
Have your studies benefited you on a professional level?
I was able to choose electives that aligned with my ambitions and I now have a better understanding of the dynamics of organisations as a whole. I have gained an insight into intercultural management and best practises for managing a multicultural environment.
How did you prioritise your coursework, life and commitments? How did you manage your stress levels?
Working part-time and being an international student is definitely not an easy task. Even simple things like contacting family and friends back home had to be scheduled in advance due to a thirteen hour time difference.
Talking to them and maintaining contact was my emotional outlet for when I felt alone. I dedicated weekends to sports and going out and committed my weekdays to assignments, presentations and group meetings.
How have your soft skills developed?
Studying logistics, finance, accounting and other disciplines within a diverse environment have allowed me to better communicate with other departments. Conveying a message or asking questions are not as simple as it seems, especially when encountering people from different backgrounds and experiences. I’ve refined my communication and developed my team-working, problem solving and motivational skills.
What are your plans for the future? What do you aspire to accomplish?
The program has given me a good understanding of the different aspects of an organisation from a multinational perspective and I am now looking for a position to apply my refined skills.
I want to ensure line managers are provided with high quality HR support and advice that is compliant with legislation and meets organisational goals. I want to instigate change, integrating HR, policies and legislation to the mechanics of businesses in order to optimise success.
