Graduate Diploma in Journalism
I chose to study the Graduate Diploma in Journalism at RMIT because I knew people who previously did the same course and they went on to get very good jobs both in Australia and overseas.
“I knew that the staff had connections to international newspapers and that overseas internships could be a possibility if I did well.
“Most of the time, it felt like we were being trained by industry insiders rather than academics. Some of the best industry connections I have made were through the course. Also, I was part of an extremely intelligent group of students who either had gone through their education or previous fields with the determination that one day they would be journalists.
“Six months after I graduated, The Guardian Global Development site ran a photo essay of mine from the Thai-Cambodian border town of Poipet, about an exodus of more than 250,000 undocumented Cambodian migrant workers from Thailand. I was there to make a video report for the news organisation I work for, The Phnom Penh Post, but it was the first time I actually sold some of my pictures and they were presented beautifully on the site. As someone who has always been passionate about photojournalism and documentary photography, I have always wanted to take photographs worthy of such a respected, quality outlet.”
