STUDENT
Molly Yang – Communication Design
Molly’s passion for design and her desire to work abroad inspired her to combine communication design studies with Chinese Language electives.
I was initially inspired to study design through my love of fashion, which derives from my early days of playing with Barbie dolls. My inspiration also comes from a desire to uncover the link between design and human survival.
I chose to study Chinese electives in my degree to gain a deeper understanding of my heritage, and strengthen my language skills so I am prepared to work abroad or with overseas clients when the opportunity arises.
Before undertaking the Chinese Language elective, I could hardly read or write in Chinese, even though I had spoken it all my life. I wanted to challenge myself through language and do something outside of design.
I hope my degree will take me abroad at some point. I would be honoured to work for a luxury fashion house in Europe.
Strengthening my language skills has made me more excited for the future, as I would love to be able to work in Asia or for Asian clients and, ultimately, contribute to the Eastern and Western world.
During my design studies, I undertook placements at a design studio and at RMIT. Through these placements, I was able to design for professional clients and respond to feedback. The RMIT placement gave me the opportunity to design within corporate guidelines. The two placements prepared me for both potential future employment within the corporate world and designing in a boutique studio.
I love what I do because I get to mix creativity with functionality.
