From electrician to United Energy scholarship winner, Declan Lammers is hoping his degree in electrical engineering will lead to a successful career in the power industry.
Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) (Honours)
RMIT’s connection with industry helps maintain a good balance between the essential, theoretical and practical skills required for entering industry.
From a young age I have been inquisitive. The need to understand how things work has always driven me to learn more. From this curiosity, I took to science, physics and maths, which evolved into an interest in electricity. After high school I was working as an electrician but felt driven to learn more. This brought me to start a bachelor degree in electrical engineering.
I decided to study at RMIT as the University’s connection with industry helps maintain a good balance between the essential, theoretical and practical skills required for entering the workforce. This relationship also provides students with numerous opportunities including scholarships, internships and collaborative industry projects. All of these greatly assist students in both networking as well as becoming adept graduate engineers.
I was lucky enough to be awarded the United Energy and Multinet Gas Scholarship, which lead to being given an work placement opportunity over the summer period.
Over my placement I was fortunate enough to be exposed to a range of work types, site visits and mentoring from professional industry engineers. This proved to be an extremely rewarding experience giving me a detailed perspective on what a career in the power industry can offer.
I hope that this degree and the opportunities I have taken will lead to a successful and rewarding career within the power industry.
