Harrison Schipke moved from Far North Queensland to study his dream double degree of automotive engineering and business management. With amazing academic results, he’s aiming for a global career.
Bachelor of Engineering (Automotive Engineering) (Honours)/Bachelor of Business (Management)
To be able to complete a business management degree as part of my automotive engineering program attracted me to what RMIT offered.
I have always had a passion for automotive engineering. The joy of engineering is being able to think of an idea, sketch it, develop it and then manufacture it into a reality. Automotive engineering takes this concept the next step further and allows you to be a part of the vehicle and feel the creation you have contributed to.
RMIT is the only university in Australia to offer a degree in automotive engineering. So it was a no-brainer for me to move from my home in Far North Queensland and enrol at RMIT once I finished high school. To also be able to complete a business management degree as part of my program attracted me to RMIT. I know it will give me the opportunity to be a competent and successful leader in my future workplace.
During my program I’ve been able to use a range of engineering facilities. The wind tunnel at Bundoora campus east is full scale industrial size, and is quite an extraordinary sight when running.
RMIT has strong connections with many leading companies in the automotive industry such as BMW AG, Audi AG and Volkswagen. Through the RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program (RIIERP), students have the opportunity to undertake work placement at these companies and as a result gain valuable experience. As I have been accepted into the 2017 RIIERP program, I will now have the chance to apply my skills and knowledge at one of these industry leading companies this coming year.
My advice for future students is to take any opportunity that the university provides. Engineering may seem scary the first day you walk into the lecture theatre, but if you put in the effort and try to be the best you can, you will be rewarded in the long run with a career you’ll never want to change.
I hope from being successful in my RMIT degree I can land a dream job at Porsche AG. Having the opportunity to come into work each day and work with the 919 Hybrid or 911 GT3 would be an absolute experience; there would never be a dull day.
