RMIT alumni Casey Masters used the skills he learned in his Sustainable Systems Engineering degree to implement an Environmental Management System for a manufacturing facility.
Bachelor of Engineering (Sustainable Systems Engineering) (Honours)
I recently completed an Environmental Management System for a manufacturing facility, which will help its workers to identify, prevent, and improve controls for environmental hazards.
I have always been interested in how machines work and how we use them to improve our lives. I also feel that climate change is the biggest problem that the global society is currently facing. These two factors led me towards studying sustainable systems engineering.
RMIT is the only university in Australia with an engineering course dedicated to sustainability. With the future of industry aiming towards a more sustainable future, the decision to study at RMIT was very easy for me.
During my studies, I learned about renewable energy sources and how it is possible to make current technical systems and infrastructure more efficient. Applying this knowledge is exactly what I want to make my life’s work.
The highlight of my studies were the practical laboratory classes and projects. I enjoyed applying new knowledge in a tangible way. Being able to produce a result that physically demonstrated the engineering concepts was a lot of fun and helped to verify the theories that are explored in the classroom.
I recently completed an Environmental Management System for a manufacturing facility in north-east Victoria, which will help its workers to identify, prevent, and improve controls for, environmental hazards on the site.
My greatest achievement so far has been working with senior associates to introduce ISO14001 to this facility, so that associates can successfully manage the various environmental impacts of manufacturing. This helps to minimise environmental damage, comply with state and national requirements, and also improves relationships with internal and external stakeholders of the company. The Environmental Management System we implemented focuses on continual improvement, so the procedures that we put in place will provide a lasting foundation for environmental control at this site.
