Gerianne Robles is exploring the potential of biogas as a renewable energy alternative as part of her Masters of Engineering (Environmental Engineering) research program.

I hope my research will help lay the foundations for future dedicated biogas plants in Australia.
The world is becoming more environmentally aware of the importance of waste management and the need to move from fossil fuels to renewable alternatives. I am passionate about these areas and my research allows me to combine them both.
My research focuses on the production of biogas from household organic waste (such as food waste and garden waste) using chemical and biological processes.
I completed my bachelor degree at RMIT with a focus on groundwater management. My honours thesis however looked at biogas recovery and led me to want to further develop my interest in bioenergy. My research project is a continuation of this.
My supervisors have continually motivated me throughout my studies and collaborate with me on new ideas all the time. My associate supervisor is Swedish, and this opened up the opportunity for me to work with her for five months at the Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery.
During my time in Sweden, I had the privilege of taking lectures and doing project work with an influential researcher. It was inspiring to hear him speak so ambitiously about the future of renewable energy.
It was an amazing experience being in a different laboratory and being exposed to a different culture, learning new things, and building networks and making new friends with people from all over the world.
I presented my work at the European Biomass Conference (EUBCE) 2016 in Amsterdam. It was a great way to share my research, network with other people working in similar fields, and of course to experience Amsterdam!
Biogas production from waste has been around for many decades now but most of the knowledge is overseas. There is not a lot of research in the area locally. I hope my research will help lay the foundations for future dedicated biogas plants in Australia.
