As part of her sustainable systems engineering degree Susan Ahmad completed a work placement in the transportation industry to gain the experience needed to secure a full-time job as a graduate.

It is because of RMIT and the preparation and help they provided, that I have found exactly where I want to be!
I became interested in engineering in my final year of high school – I enjoyed problem solving and understanding how things worked, and was fond of mathematics and physics.
I wanted to undertake an engineering degree that allowed students to be interactive and hands-on, not one that focused predominantly on theory. RMIT was my first choice because it’s recognised internationally as one of the best for engineering education and research.
I chose to specialise in transport and logistics, which meant taking transport engineering subjects from other engineering sectors. It was here I gained a foundation in software packages that I now use at work.
I completed six weeks’ full-time work experience at GTA Consultants in the summer of 2015 and worked part-time for the rest of the placement while studying.
Here I had the opportunity to be involved in a range of projects, including strategic transport modeling, mesoscopic modeling and microstimulation modeling of large and regional urban centres across Australia.
Not only was I able to accumulate new skills and experience, I was also performing better at my studies because my placement helped me to strengthen my time management skills.
Today, I work at GTA as a Graduate Engineer/Consultant in the Transport Analytics Team. It is because of RMIT and the preparation and help they provided, that I have found exactly where I want to be!
I plan to continue on this path and gain as my experience as I can in the traffic and transport engineering sector. One day, I’d like to be a Project Manager in my specialised field.
