Eight years out of high school, Patrick decided to go with his gut and pursue his passion for Engineering.
Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) (Honours)
Having the opportunity to be involved with world-leading research projects has been transformative for both my studies and career.
As a young adult, I developed a passion for building things with my hands and a keen interest in motorsports and engineering.
After completing an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic and a Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology, the Advanced Diploma of Engineering (Mechanical) seemed like the perfect stepping stone into an engineering career.
When I started at RMIT, I was eight years out of high school and had only studied further maths during VCE. The tutors were extremely patient and helped with everything from basic maths, through to learning more advanced concepts such as vector calculus.
After completing the Advanced Diploma with a 4.0 GPA, I was awarded the 2017 RMIT Award for Vocational Education. As part of this award, I received a scholarship to continue studying at RMIT, where I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) part-time.
RMIT offers a good balance between practical and theory based learning, and the highlight of my studies would have to be completing a 12-month internship with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group). Having the opportunity to be involved with world-leading research projects has been transformative for both my studies and career.
I was also given the opportunity to support the RMIT team at the 2016 WorldSkills National Championships. I was able to use the specialist equipment available to me at DST Group and assisted the team by manufacturing components of the model we presented at the competition.
Working on multiple projects, meeting deadlines, communication and working as part of a team have been some of the most important skills I’ve developed through my studies; skills I use in the workplace every day.
I currently work as an engineering technician with Advanced Composite Structures Australia (ACS Australia). It’s recognised as one of Australia’s leading composite technology organisations. I’m now involved with aerospace composite research projects and get to work alongside some brilliant engineers.
I plan to continue building on my technical expertise and hope to eventually find myself in a senior technical engineering role. I would love to run a research laboratory and manage a technical team.
