I chose RMIT to study surveying because of its reputation for teaching and producing some of the best land surveyors in the country. It’s a practical program and you gain hands-on skills relevant to the workplace.
Surveying has allowed me to combine my enjoyment of mapping and working outdoors.

It’s a practical program and you gain hands-on skills relevant to the workplace. I’ve learnt to use a variety of computer drafting programs such as, LISCAD, AUTOCAD, ArcMap, Civil 3D and REVIT. My practical skills also extend to setting up and using total stations and GPS equipment.
I really enjoyed completing the major project in final year. It gave me the opportunity to create a project of my choice and utilised the skills and knowledge I’d gained throughout the program.
My advice to students considering studying surveying is that if you love working outdoors, being part of a team and have an eye for detail, this program is ideal.
I’m currently working part-time for a surveying firm, using the skills and knowledge learnt at RMIT and applying them to workplace projects.
I’m looking forward to completing the program and working full-time, eventually I hope to be a mine surveyor.
I love what I do because there’s a great balance between field work and office work - every job is different and there’s the potential to work anywhere in the world.
