Tanyya Varshney loves the way her field of study delivers insights into everything from business decision-making to government planning, and knows that the ability to decipher ‘big data’ has given her a huge advantage.
Master of Data Science
The course I wanted to pursue was Master of Data Science and I had explored other universities, but the course structure provided by RMIT stood out. RMIT staff were a great help too when it came to solving enrolment queries.
Master of Data Science student Tanyya Varshney is already reaping the benefits of specialised study in IT, right when she needed to go deeper into her field of choice after studying computer engineering in India.
"Data Science has become a buzz word in recent years and has been declared as the sexiest job of the 21st century. I have always been curious about finding different ways to play with data and discovering hidden patterns in today’s huge volume, complex variety, and high-velocity data. All this, combined with the growing career aspects in this field, has motivated me to go deeper into the world of Data Science".
Tanyya has also discovered that RMIT is one of the best places to pursue data science. "One of the best things about RMIT are the faculties and staff. The teachers are extremely helpful and ready to solve any minor doubt you have and give you time individually if you don’t understand a concept. The level of the assignments helps us understand how to implement all the theoretical knowledge in practical environment".
Taught by academics with strong links to industry, teachers in the program are also involved with RMIT Data Analytics Lab - a hub for advanced data projects that help Australian businesses compete on a global scale.
"RMIT organises various presentations from different companies which helps quite a lot in networking directly with company officials. Also, the in-build Job Shop program in RMIT not only assists us with full-time job opportunities but also for part-time and casual work opportunities".
RMIT also offered opportunities to experience an industry internship, along with projects that give you hands-on practical experience analysing data in a project setting. "My dream job is to work as a Data Scientist in Google and I believe my degree will support me in achieving this. RMIT is also one of the most happening universities to be in. It provides many volunteering activities, conducts various events for socialising, presentations from different companies, guidance on how to get into the job market".
After moving from her home in India, Tanyya is also now thoroughly enjoying life Melbourne.
"I can say that I took the right decision! The diversity in Melbourne, its welcoming and friendly environment, cost-effective studies and good career opportunities originally inspired me to choose Melbourne. Now I can say that I took the right decision and Melbourne stands up to all my expectations".
