My experience in IT support made me aware of the increasing number of hackers stealing information and the rise of cyber warfare.
After completing a double degree in information technology and chemistry I found work in various IT support positions before I decided to try something else.
My experience in IT support made me aware of the increasing number of hackers stealing information and the rise of cyber warfare. The Master of Information Security and Assurance is a degree specifically designed to address a niche in the market. I felt that this was a good choice for my career.
The program enables the opportunity to make industry contacts via guest lecturers and networking events hosted by the university. Even if you have all the skills to do something well, it’s often someone within your network that helps you land the job.
The master program also suits me because it has an option to receive a Graduate Diploma when I complete my first year.
It’s been very satisfying to discover a discipline where I feel I am well-suited based on how much I enjoy and excel in each unit. This degree has really engaged my curiosity and it’s led me to become a skilled researcher.
I’ve been involved with many on-campus activities – including Information Security ambassador on RMIT Open Day and a position in RMIT’s Information Security club – and I look forward to becoming involved in next year’s mentoring programs.
A master by course work degree is designed to be focused on a particular career, so my advice would be to commence postgraduate study only once you’ve decided on your career path.
My main priority now is to develop my academic skills, get industry experience and find work in my new field.
My dream job is one that continually evolves and encourages me to use my curiosity to solve problems. I am driven and enjoy giving my brain a workout through continuous learning and solving problems.
