A passion for social justice and equal opportunity inspired Micaela Ledin to study international development at RMIT.
Growing up in a privileged environment – especially as a girl – I was astonished to learn at a young age that such a life is not available to all people. I’m determined to do something to change this reality, and it is through the experiences offered in the Master of International Development that I felt I could best achieve this.
Of all the postgraduate options I researched, RMIT’s program seemed to offer the most hands-on experience, which I knew would be vital as I progressed into the international development sector beyond my undergraduate degree.
In my studies I’ve learnt how a single action can have major positive or negative implications across the globe. For my capstone research project I travelled to Sierra Leone and Uganda for three weeks, and the experience presented me with an overwhelming abundance of questions about the work I do, who I am, and what I’ve learnt in the masters degree. When I came back to Australia I was able to investigate these questions in a deeper theoretical manner, reflecting on my experiences for the research project.
Postgraduate study has given me the opportunity to continue my learning in a practical, in-depth way that builds on what I achieved in undergraduate study. Lessons are presented by experts in the field they are teaching, bringing with them valuable experience and passion to make the learning experience all the more unique and inspiring. The opportunities for internships and work experience, industry-presented seminars hosted by RMIT, and learning alongside like-minded peers all make postgraduate study a holistic learning experience.
The Master of International Development has set me up with the theoretical and practical tools, skills and knowledge to become anything I aspire to in the field of development. I dream of travelling across the globe, working with and meeting some of the amazing, inspiring and passionate people who share my goal to live in a just and equitable world.
At RMIT I feel empowered as an individual and a professional to follow my career and life goals, and do something that not only makes me happy but can also make a real difference.
