Course Summary

As architects, we navigate the tangible realm of the built environment and the intangible world of ideas and context, seeking solutions informed by societal, cultural, technological, and environmental concerns. In an era of political extremities, rapid power shifts, extreme consumerism, and climate change denial, this course introduces a selective study of contemporary issues including Indigenous knowledges, environmental concerns, and technological opportunities that shape the built environment.

Integrating history, Indigenous knowledges, professional practice, environment, technology, and design, students explore how these inform contemporary architecture and its application in design work. This core course in the Master of Architecture program uses lectures by RMIT staff and guests to examine research modes, preparing students for Major Project through research by design techniques at Masters level.
