Course Summary

In this course, you will develop advanced knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate quality improvement initiatives in mental health nursing practice. You will explore the dimensions of quality improvement, including safety, recovery, equity, and human rights by drawing on current research, policy, and practice guidelines. You will then apply these concepts to real-world mental health service contexts.

Through structured modules, you will critically analyse advanced quality improvement methodologies and their relationship to clinical decision-making, evidence-based practice, and consumer-centred outcomes. You will engage in learning activities that support you to translate theory into practice, and to design quality improvement activities that are ethical, transparent, accountable, and aligned with professional and regulatory standards.

A major component of this course is the completion of a quality improvement project in a mental health practice setting. As a team leader or member, you will plan, implement, and critically evaluate a quality improvement initiative in collaboration with consumers, families, and interprofessional colleagues. By engaging in this project, you will apply quality improvement principles and findings to enhance mental health nursing processes and outcomes at both service and system levels, in alignment with national and global mental health priorities.
