You will extend your foundational knowledge and skills in Biological Psychology – a branch of neuroscience that considers how biological processes underpins mental functions and behaviour. The course builds on material you studied in BESC1125/1126 Foundations of Psychology. Topics may include neuronal structure and neurotransmission; the organisation and function of the nervous system; sleep and biological rhythms; hormones and behaviour; the biological basis of memory; neuroplasticity; and biology processes associated with stress and mental health. Case studies and clinical examples will draw on insights from cognitive neuroscience to illustrate how neural activity supports and interacts with psychological processes.
You’ll learn through small-group tutorials focused on discussion, interactive workshops designed to support your major written assessment, lectorials for core content delivery, and online resources to guide your learning. A grounding in biological psychology is vital for further study in psychology, offering insight into how biological and psychological processes interact, and providing a foundation for research and professional practice
