Course Summary

This course will elevate the analytical skills of the students in relation to the materials selection in contemporary engineering applications. A Design-led materials and process selection approach, called material indices method, will be introduced for maximizing the engineering performance in a given application. The materials selection done in this way will be based on rigorous mathematical criteria and supported by a dedicated software package, Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES Edupack) that is available online and on Campus. The material indices method also allows material substitutions while meeting multiple and/or conflicting constraints (for example, finding materials which are cheap but also light). Emphasis is put onto structural applications, but examples involving physical properties will be addressed as well.
