Course Summary

This course applies a gendered lens to examine how development and globalisation shape, and are shaped by, gender across time, place, and context. Drawing on feminist theories of human rights, labour, care, intersectionality, and power; you will explore case studies from the global care chain to the gendered impacts of global trade that illustrate how cultural practices reproduce, challenge, or transform gender norms. You will assess how development processes and outcomes affect individuals unequally, articulate how gender structures opportunities at local and global scales, and apply these insights to critically evaluate and propose more equitable and inclusive development initiatives.
