Course Summary
As urban populations increase, so do the pressures placed by cities on natural resources and environments. At the same time, planners face the critical challenge of how to maintain liveability for urban residents. In this course you will focus on the role of clean, green cities, including the innovative policies, planning and practices that drive sustainability led urban change to address key issues such as high energy use, poor air quality, flooding, hotter cities, lack of green space and food production. You will critically engage with the opportunities and challenges of green city initiatives in policy, practice and urban design. Key to the course is an emphasis on examining the nature of technology-focused innovation, collaborative models of governance and the role of place-based community participation and inclusion in the achievement of the green city ideal.
