Course Summary
This course further develops your capabilities in mechanics and materials. You will analyse combined shear, axial and bending loads, and design for strength in both tension and compression. Design for deflection will be covered, and various techniques will be used to calculate deflections, including energy methods.
You will examine the underlying assumptions used in mechanics of solids analysis and recognise the environments under which engineering materials do not behave according to these assumptions. Situations of high and low temperatures and loading rates, fatigue loading and loads exceeding the yield strength will be examined.
