Course Summary

This course focuses on the process of procuring a building or structure, and you will examine the process of construction in its historical, economic and practice based contexts. Specifically, this course will develop your knowledge of:
  • the construction process and how this relates to construction management and the construction industry
  • the stages involved in the procurement of a building: from client conception, through design, construction, operation and demolition/re-use.
In this course you will also examine the different forms of communication that take place between the parties involved in the procurement process, including contracts, specifications and drawings. Topics studied include:
  • History of procurement: the changing roles of the Architect, Engineer, construction professionals and trades
  • Stages in the procurement process
  • Teams and procurement routes required to deliver projects
  • Communication between teams on a construction project, including different methods of communication such as contracts, specifications and drawings
