Course Summary
Accounting in Organisations and Society introduces you to the role of accounting information in business and more broadly, in society. In this course you will learn the basic principles underlying the production of financial information and its use in decision-making by various user groups including managers, shareholders, lenders and investment analysts. The course depicts accounting as the language of business communication. Accounting in Organisations and Society is a compulsory core course in the Bachelor of Business suite of degrees, and is also a pre-requisite for more advanced courses in accounting.
In this course you will gain insights into the meaning and role of accounting and of accountants in the larger context of a changing and interconnected world of people, organisations and the changing planet upon which we live.
You will develop an understanding of key ideas or concepts which you will reflect upon and appreciate that these accounting concepts mean more than their technical representations but have a strong influence on organisations and society.
The course structure, content and learning activities provide you with an understanding of accounting's pervasive and transformative role as a social practice and organisational driver. You will learn that environments, ideas and values are part of an interconnected world; that the planet is a key resource; and that people are affected and influenced by the information they receive and the way it is presented.
