This course focuses on the teaching of mathematics and numeracy in early childhood and primary settings. It looks at why and how the teaching of school mathematics has changed in response to an increased focus on numeracy and mathematical reasoning.
You will participate in the practices and strategies that teachers use, such as open-ended questions, problem-solving, rich tasks, mathematical games and innovative and purposeful uses of resources to enhance student learning. You will learn how young children think about mathematics and the typical way that children's thinking develops in relation to numbers.
