Course Summary

You will explore the fundamentals of food packaging and labelling, including the selection and application of non-biodegradable, semi-biodegradable, and biodegradable materials. You will learn about intelligent and active packaging, atmospheric control (including modified and controlled atmosphere packaging), sensors, logistics and tracking, and printing systems used in packaging. Through lectures, laboratory practicals, and group projects, you will develop skills in shelf-life prediction, vapour and gas permeability calculations, and testing of the mechanical properties of packaging materials. You will also gain a thorough understanding of government and industry regulations related to labelling requirements.
