In this course you will be introduced to the academic discipline of Youth Studies and critically explore the evolving concept of ‘youth’. You will examine how 'Youth' and young people are constructed within historical, ideological, economic, and political contexts, drawing on core theories, trends, and events. The course will delve into the history of youth studies, engaging with key concepts, influential approaches, and important theorists and the relevance for knowing and working with young people today. You will also learn the discipline-specific language used to discuss the life stage of ‘youth’ and the ways we study young people.  

The course will consider ‘youth’ through various disciplinary perspectives, including sociological, biological, and psychological, as well as intergenerational, Southern, and intercultural lenses. You will explore central issues and debates, such as youth rights, youth transitions in the Global North and South, adultism, resilience, and youth governance, to understand the lived experiences and social structures impacting young people. This course aims to provide you with a comprehensive foundational understanding and critical insight into contemporary youth studies.
