Course Summary
This course will introduce you to a range of different custom fashion design practice models and how they contribute and relate to the larger fashion system. You will investigate practices such as bespoke, custom made, made to measure and customisation and learn about the broad range of specialist areas addressed by custom fashion design practices. You will develop an understanding of the direct relationship between client, designer and craftsperson and their varying levels of collaboration and input in designing and making processes by engaging in research and practical projects.
Each project introduces students to a range of new techniques and skills specific to custom fashion design practice and builds on their knowledge from previous fashion design studio courses.
The aim of this course is to introduce specialist areas of practice that are directly connected to the very specific needs of an end user or client. The focus is to explore the opportunities and potential limitations for custom design to contribute to design within areas such as specialist use, special occasion, special needs, health and wellbeing, custom sizing, personal protection and personalisation.
