By bringing together the key elements of the earlier courses, this course has a focus on the four macros skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking together with a focus on the newer literacies of viewing and creating multimodal texts. Everyday communication practices are increasingly shaped by information and multimedia technologies, so learners need to learn increasingly complex literacies as they navigate multimodal and hybrid texts. A focus on the reading and writing skills of those who are new to learning English as an academic language in the upper primary.
This course builds on from early reading and introduces students to knowledge about language from the text level through to the paragraph, sentence level and word level. With a focus on the functional aspects of language in use, students will consider the reciprocity between reading and writing and consider teaching strategies and planning for literacies learning. A focus on the teaching of writing in the genres of persuasive text, informative texts and imaginative texts will be central to this course.
