Course Summary

Ideas and practices of masculinity and manhood have undergone tremendous changes in recent decades. This course explores different perspectives on traditional and emerging masculinities through the interdisciplinary frameworks of cultural, feminist, and queer studies. You will be introduced to key concepts, theories, and debates about masculinity in the context of its intersections with race, class, sexuality, and (dis)ability. The course investigates discourses of power and harmful norms of masculinity and the role of rituals and institutions in shaping the lived experiences and practices of masculinity. The course will equip you with the capacity to articulate a more open idea of masculinity that is inclusive of queer, trans, non-binary, and feminine identities.
