Course Summary

In this course, you will explore the intersections of mental health, cognitive impairment and the criminal justice system. Designed to equip you with essential skills and knowledge for professional practice, the course addresses a range of critical topics including the epidemiology of mental disorders, diagnostic and screening methods, and legal considerations related to criminal responsibility, capacity, and fitness to stand trial. You will examine pathways and diversion strategies, engage with diverse populations, and evaluate offender treatment programs. You will also explore advocacy and oversight roles, emphasising the need for, and effectiveness of, various supports and their impact on people's pathways through the justice system. This comprehensive approach will prepare you to navigate and contribute effectively to the field of mental health within criminal justice contexts.
