Course Summary

In this course, you will challenge traditional notions of exhibition while establishing a more substantial, independent studio practice. Moving beyond conventional gallery spaces, you will explore diverse sites of exhibition including virtual realms, the body as canvas, and impossible architectures. Through critical engagement with contemporary exhibition practices, you will investigate concepts such as site-specific installations, digital and AI-constructed spaces, the body as site of exhibition, and impossible spaces of display.

Building on your previous experience, you will synthesise, research, and apply new methodologies to develop innovative approaches to concepts, materials, and processes. The course emphasises experimental forms of curatorial thinking, examining how site, studio, and self, intersect in contemporary art practice. You will explore dislocated exhibitions and imaginary spaces to question traditional exhibition formats.

This course culminates in a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activity where you will produce a resolved body of work that establishes a social and cultural framework for your contemporary art practice. You will test these artworks in both traditional and experimental exhibition formats, where your skills will be applied in real or simulated professional contexts. Industry and community feedback will be integral as you push the boundaries of what an exhibition can be.

This course is part of the Major: 2D Studio Practices.
