Course Summary

The broad field of documentary photography intersects with a variety of industries including galleries, museums, libraries, government, media and publishing. While this broad reach enables fluidity across industries it also requires a critical awareness of industry conventions and protocols.

In this course, you will pursue an independent or collaborative documentary project and develop an industry pitch. You will research and contextualise your project and explore suitable areas for your work. You will be challenged to design a critical research methodology that reflects on your positionality, responsibilities and civil intention.

Lectures and workshops will critically examine differing industry standards and conventions for contemporary documentary projects across industries. Feedback sessions and discussions with industry leaders will focus on developing an industry pitch and documentary project.

This course includes Industry Partnered Learning (IPL) in the form of a simulated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activity where you will have the opportunity to participate in authentic industry and community engaged activities and tasks to support your professional development and career planning. This course is part of Major and Minor: World-centred Photography and Major: Photography.
