Course Summary

Photography offers unique possibilities for artistic exploration and reflection on our relationship with the environment. This course examines the intersection of photographic art practice, environmental concerns and sustainability in the context of the ongoing climate crisis. You will investigate how photography can be used to respond to environmental changes, critique unsustainable practices and inspire new ways of thinking about our planet's future.

You will develop photographic artworks that address environmental issues, sustainability concepts, the impacts of climate change and explore various approaches to image-making including experimental techniques, conceptual photography and site-specific responses. You will engage with historical and contemporary examples of environmental art photography, as well as emerging discourses on the role of art in addressing ecological concerns.

An important component of the course involves critically examining the environmental impact of photographic practices themselves. This includes exploring the carbon footprint of digital and analogue photography, the lifecycle of photographic equipment and materials, and the environmental costs of image storage and distribution. You will consider how your creative choices relate to broader questions of sustainability and learn about more sustainable ways to approach your practice.

This course is part of the Major and Minor: Art-centred Photography and Major: Photography.
