This course examines painting and contemporary creative practice through the lens of global practices, migration and cultural identities. You will explore how a range of painting methods, artistic traditions, materials, and practices are shaped by histories of trade, empire, and diaspora.???The course examines how contemporary painting responds to global conversations about who creates art, how materials are selected and how painting is encountered.???
By questioning its established traditions and contexts painting can be reimagined in a contemporary field. Special attention is paid to how artists interrogate and influence discourses around migration, transcultural forms, and cultural identities as they emerge across diverse contexts. You will consider your own subject positions and cultural heritages while exploring how creative practice can engage with and reshape complex narratives of migration, cultural transitions, cultural and artistic exchanges, and global experiences.????
You will develop a body of exploratory research and resolved artworks relating to your individual interests and interpretation of the course thematic. You will be encouraged to find your own way to draw from this rich field of research and interpret ideas as it relates to your own individual creative practices.
