Course Summary

Stars and celebrities are central to the history and future of screen media and popular culture. In this course you will explore the social, cultural, ideological and industrial paradigms that have informed stardom, which may include the emergence of 'picture personalities', the Hollywood star system, national and transnational stars, through to audience reception and modes of fandom; the rise of the pop and sports star; the 'star' director/auteur; celebrity personas and influencers; and the dominant celebrity culture of today. The course will examine the rise and changing nature of stardom and celebrity and consider how this sits within wider media cultures.
