This course is undertaken in conjunction with and links with the learning methods of HWSS2232 Work Integrated Learning (WIL) 1 course in the Youth Work Major.
In this course you will learn about critical group and community work and development theories applicable to local, regional, and national contexts.
Working alongside communities and groupwork is a longstanding feature of youth work practice. You will explore and develop skills in the wide range of activities associated with community engagement and groupwork and that support communities to identify and take collective action towards the social change and development they desire.
You will engage with a range of perspectives and approaches including social activism, forms of community development, community consultation, co-design, participation, advocacy, community strengthening and regeneration, and community care. You will build knowledge and skills in diverse group work practices; designing, planning and evaluating group programs and understanding and managing group processes and dynamics. Your learning will be based on your reflective and reflexive practice in groups within the course. This exploration will support you to understand your positionality, develop project ideas and adaptive praxis skills required to work with and alongside various groups and communities in a culturally responsive way.
Please note that if you take this course for a Bachelor Honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. See the WAM information web page for more information.
This is a designated WIL course. In this course, you will also undertake learning activities that engage and connect with industry partners.
This course is also part of the Minors ‘Youth Studies’ and ‘Art and Social Science Intersections’.
