Course Summary

This course introduces key concepts, frameworks and theories relevant to working with people experiencing mental distress which contribute to mental health. The course will develop your theoretical and practice skills as an emerging practitioner. Using both first-person lived experience accounts and a variety of forms of research evidence you will explore factors and person-centred approaches that contribute to mental and emotional wellbeing. Part of this exploration is a consideration of how the experience of receiving support for experiences of mental distress, is not universally positive.

The course is an introductory course in a suite of twelve courses that form the Mental Health and Wellbeing Major and is part of the Youth Work Major within the Bachelor of Social Science. It is also the Introductory course in the suite of four courses making up a Mental Health & Wellbeing Minor, Art and Social Sciences Minor and Youth Studies Minor.
