In this course, you will learn how occupational therapists work with groups to support shared occupations, participation and wellbeing. You will explore why people join groups across different contexts and how group dynamics, environments and social interactions shape engagement. Through workshops, case scenarios and Work Integrated Learning in real or simulated settings, you will begin developing practical skills in planning and facilitating occupation-centred group sessions. You will also examine different types of occupational therapy groups and practise adapting activities to meet diverse needs, preparing you for more complex group and community-focused practice later in the program.
Building on your foundational experience working with individuals, this course extends your understanding of occupation by examining how shared activities, belonging and social connection influence participation. You will investigate a range of group-based approaches used in occupational therapy, including activity-based, educational, therapeutic and community-focused groups. Through analysing group roles, communication patterns, motivation and group stages, you will learn how facilitation can shape engagement and support positive group outcomes.
You will develop practical capabilities in session planning, selecting and grading occupations, and considering cultural, ethical and environmental factors that influence participation. Workshops and guided facilitation activities will support you to practise leading groups, responding to group dynamics and adapting activities for diverse needs. Your facilitation skills will be further developed through a Work Integrated Learning experience, where you will apply group-based approaches in a real or simulated context with feedback from industry or community partners.
By the end of this course, you will be able to analyse group needs, plan and facilitate simple occupation-based group activities, and reflect on your developing facilitation style. This course prepares you for future learning focused on more complex group, community and participation-oriented practice education across the program.
